A recent New Zealand tourist has sparked praise for Kuala Lumpur International Airport after sharing an experience that highlighted how the airport’s facilities put passenger comfort first.
KLIA is often complimented for its iconic architecture and wide range of dining options. This time, however, the spotlight was on something far more practical: its efficient and surprisingly “human-centred” Grab and e-hailing waiting system.
Improvement on the e-hailing pickup area
For frequent users, the old routine was familiar. Passengers had to head to a designated pickup area, stand by the roadside in Malaysia’s humid heat, and scan through streams of vehicles while juggling luggage. It was tiring, especially after a long flight.
That experience has since changed.
According to a traveller who posted on TikTok, the current e-hailing pickup area allows passengers to wait indoors in a cool and comfortable space.
The area is equipped with a smart camera system that scans the number plates of incoming vehicles.

Screens in the waiting area
Once a car enters the pickup zone, its details are displayed on large digital screens inside the waiting area.
The screens show not only the vehicle’s plate number but also the exact bay where it has stopped. Passengers only need to head out once their car is confirmed to be waiting at the door.

The traveller joked that the system even allowed them to enjoy a cup of corn in peace without worrying about missing their ride.
There was no longer a need to drag heavy bags around just to ensure the driver could spot them.
While simple, the innovation left a strong impression. It reduces roadside congestion, streamlines pickups, and offers much-needed comfort to travellers who may already be exhausted from flying.
