A foreign tourist was left pleasantly surprised at a Malaysian airport when staff handed out umbrellas to passengers walking to their aircraft in the rain, a small act of unexpected hospitality that she says is almost unheard of in Europe.
In a now-viral TikTok uploaded by user @margitdob, the traveller expressed how touched she was to see airport staff going the extra mile to ensure passengers stayed dry despite the weather.
She said such gestures are rare even in European airports known for their efficiency.
At the airport in Malaysia, they hand out umbrellas to passengers when it rains. I’ve never seen this in Europe. Well done, Malaysia,” she said.
Small gesture, big impact

Her heartfelt praise quickly drew positive reactions online, especially from Malaysians who felt proud to see the country’s hospitality recognised by international visitors.
The simple act of providing umbrellas ensured that passengers, whether juggling multiple bags, caring for young children, or rushing to catch their flight did not have to get drenched on the way to their plane.
Many felt this small convenience perfectly reflected Malaysia’s culture of kindness, politeness and helpfulness.
Malaysians respond with pride

The video’s comment section soon filled with messages from both locals and tourists who had experienced the same treatment, with many saying it made them feel valued as travellers.
One Malaysian wrote:
“Malaysia is really like that. Even if it rains a little, staff are already on standby with umbrellas. Service is tip-top. Thanks for appreciating our hospitality.”
