Most people enjoy dhal with rice or chapati but this Malaysian mum took it to a whole new level.
A viral video recently captured the charming moment a Malaysian mother drank dhal straight from a cup at a restaurant, as if it were a hot beverage.

The video follows a popular TikTok trend that’s been making the rounds lately. In one of the clips, her mum is seen casually pouring dhal into a cup and drinking it straight.
The sight amused many online viewers, as it’s quite rare to see someone enjoy dhal in such a unique way.
How her love for dhal began
Speaking exclusively to WeirdKaya, her daughter explained that her Chinese mother’s love for dhal began 30 years ago after marrying her Indian father.
Since then, dhal has become a staple in their household.
According to her, her mum usually drinks dhal from a bowl at home, treating it more like a soup.
Sharing more about the clip in the TikTok video, she said they were dining out when her mum had just finished drinking rasam from the same cup, so she simply reused it to sneak in more dhal.
She just took advantage of the cup to get her dhal fix,” she told us.

Interestingly, her daughter also revealed that her mum drank dhal almost every day while she was pregnant with her and her older brother. She believes that’s why both of them are now huge dhal fans as well.
These days, the family enjoys dhal with almost everything, from bihun and Chinese-style fried rice to crispy appalam. They even go through around 2kg of dry dhal each week!
One family member didn’t get the dhal gene
However, the youngest sibling doesn’t quite share the same passion. During her pregnancy with him, their mum apparently took a break from eating dhal which, according to her, could explain why he’s not as fond of it.
That’s her theory anyway,” her daughter remarked.

Whether or not you’d ever sip dhal from a cup, you can’t deny the sweetness of this family’s connection to the dish. It’s wholesome, quirky, and very Malaysian.
