In conjunction with Deepavali, and as part of Maxis’ “Tomorrow Begins Today” campaign featuring Real People, Real Stories, we are proud to share the inspiring journey of Dr. Madhusudhan Shanmugam or as many lovingly call him, Dr. Teddy, the “Teddy Bear Doctor.”
A long-time Maxis user, Dr. Madhu brings light to those living on society’s margins by providing free medical care every week.
But his story goes far beyond medicine, it’s a story about connection, compassion, and the power of showing up

“Are you like the others?”
There was once a child from a home who walked up to Dr. Teddy and asked a question that would change everything:
“Are you going to visit us again? Or are you just like the others who come once, give us food, and never come back?

Those words stayed with him. They weren’t just words from a child. They were a reflection of what many underprivileged communities felt, the ache of being forgotten after a single act of charity.
“That was one of the turning points,” Dr. Teddy recalls. “I realised these children weren’t just waiting for help. They were waiting for someone who wouldn’t give up on them.”
From that moment, his visits turned into a lifelong commitment to be the person who always returns.
Healing on the move
When he and his small team first started the Mobile Clinic, there was no big plan.

“We didn’t know what kind of challenges we’d face. We just started.” he said.
Each week, the mobile clinic comes alive, a humble setup where patients wait for their turn, medicine is given, and kindness fills the air with hope and care.
They treat all forms of basic medical needs, enough to ease pain, soothe worry, and remind people that someone still cares.

What began as a small act of service soon became a routine of compassion that many now depend on.
Connection that keeps the lights on
Running a free clinic is no easy task. That’s why his team began sharing their journey on social media not for recognition, but for help.
“Many NGOs started reaching out to us, offering support and sponsorship,” he said.

“Every volunteer who joins feels like family now, and all of this started because we chose to be open.”
Through these connections, the clinic gained more than just resources. It built a community that believes in the same mission: to keep the lights on for those who have long lived in the dark.
Beyond the clinic, bringing light to homes

Their work doesn’t end with medical care. Dr. Teddy and his volunteers also dedicate time to two orphanage homes, making sure the children there feel seen and celebrated.
Every Deepavali, they bring the kids out for shopping, letting them pick their own clothes, shoes, and little things that bring them joy.
“Their faces light up in ways you can’t describe,” he said.

A light that never fades
Dr. Madhu’s story is a living reminder that small, consistent actions can create lasting impact, especially when people come together.
“May each connection you spark today lead to a brighter tomorrow,” he says.

And that’s exactly what Maxis believes too, that every connection we make today, big or small, can light up someone’s world.
This Deepavali, as Malaysians celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, Maxis reminds us that the future begins with every act of kindness, every conversation, and every moment of connection.
With Maxis’ fast, reliable, and secure network keeping us connected, every call, every message, and every gesture becomes a spark that lights the way forward.
