For most married couples, owning a home marks the start of an independent life together.

But not everyone sees it that way.
Recently, a Threads user shared the story of her friend who was mocked by her in-laws for buying a low-cost flat.
“Our family never lives in flats”
According to the post, the woman and her husband had decided to buy a flat that fit their budget. However, her husband’s siblings were not happy with the decision, claiming that flats came with issues like limited parking.
One of them even said, “In our family, nobody lives in flats. All our houses are landed properties.”
When the couple finally got the keys, they invited the mother-in-law over. But instead of being happy for them, she remarked that the flat looked like a “haunted house.”
That was when the woman, who had kept quiet all this while, finally snapped.
What can we do, Mum? This is all your son can afford,” she said.
Her mother-in-law reportedly went silent after hearing that.
Years of patience finally ran out
The user who shared the story explained that the woman had always been patient despite frequent snide remarks from her husband’s family.
“All of her husband’s siblings work for the government. They tend to look down on her because she works in the private sector,” the post said.
But after hearing the same criticisms over and over again, the woman decided to defend herself.

The story quickly caught the attention of netizens, many of whom criticised the in-laws’ behaviour as lacking common sense and empathy.
Some shared that they had faced the same kind of judgment simply because their homes did not meet other people’s so-called “standards.”
