Thailand To Impose RM618 Fine On Those Wearing Overly Revealing Clothing During Songkran

Take note.
Planning to ring in Songkran in a bikini top and cut-offs? Think again.

As Thailand gears up for Songkran 2026, authorities have made it crystal clear that skimpy outfits at public water-play areas could land you with a hefty fine.

“Safe Songkran” campaign gets serious

Under the government’s “Safe Songkran, alcohol-free” campaign, the Royal Thai Police (RTP) has announced it is ready to strictly enforce the law during Songkran 2026 to cut accidents and crime, Nation Thailand reports.

Among the rules being tightened this year is one that hits closer to the wardrobe than the water gun.

Up to RM618 fine for skimpy outfits

Wearing revealing clothing or engaging in sexually suggestive behaviour in public may be prosecuted as an act of public indecency, with fines of up to 5,000 baht (approx RM618).

The rule falls under Section 388 of Thailand’s Criminal Code, which deems dressing provocatively in public as “shameful conduct,” punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 baht.

Authorities have stressed that the law applies to everyone at public Songkran celebrations, both locals and tourists alike.

This isn’t an anomaly. Last year, a woman was fined after footage of her dancing provocatively near a pickup truck during Songkran water festivities went viral.

Many netizens condemned the act, stating that it tarnished the cultural image of Songkran, with some calling for authorities to take legal action.

Police identified the woman and issued a fine under Section 388 of the Criminal Code.

Other rules tourists need to know

Beyond the dress code, several other rules are also being strictly enforced this Songkran.

For example, high-pressure water devices, including PVC-tube water cannons or modified water guns that could harm eyes or the body, are prohibited.

Offenders face up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to 4,000 baht (approx RM495).

In designated “Safe Zones” such as Khao San Road and Silom Road, powder and coloured sprays are not allowed.

Drink-driving remains heavily penalised as well, with drivers whose blood alcohol concentration exceeds 50 mg% facing up to one year in jail and fines of 5,000–20,000 baht.

Under a new traffic law in 2026, repeat offences within two years can bring up to two years’ imprisonment and fines up to 100,000 baht.

Songkran 2026 is officially celebrated from April 13 to 15, though festivities in cities like Chiang Mai and Pattaya are known to stretch well beyond the official dates.

The Tourist Police hotline, 1155, operates 24 hours a day and provides English-language assistance for those who need help during the festival.
