In a shocking and disturbing incident during Thailand’s lively Songkran Festival, a pregnant woman allegedly gave birth by the roadside and abandoned her newborn before rejoining the celebration.
According to Thai media reports, the 27-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, was participating in the annual water-splashing festivities in Bangkok on the night of April 14 around 10.30pm.
Went into labor while celebrating
While celebrating with friends, she suddenly went into labor and delivered a baby girl near a parked vehicle on the side of the road.
Shockingly, she reportedly tore the umbilical cord with her bare hands and left the newborn next to a garbage bin before casually returning to the festival to continue partying.
Moments later, passersby noticed the baby and alerted authorities. Emergency responders arrived and attempted to save the child, but tragically, the infant could not be revived.
Tried to deny childbirth
What stunned the public even further was that she was still nearby, playing with water and appearing unfazed, while the police were investigating the scene.
Despite her visible bleeding, the woman initially denied being the mother and claimed she was on her menstrual cycle.
However, she eventually cracked and eventually confessed to having just given birth while still under the effects of alcohol and severe blood loss.
The woman told authorities she didn’t know who the father was and was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
Shunned by family & friends
According to Liberty Times Net, friends of the woman revealed that she had repeatedly denied being pregnant and showed no remorse even after discarding the baby.
As such, they have chosen not to associate themselves with her anymore following the incident.
The woman currently reportedly lives alone and has two children from two previous marriages. Her mother, who resides in Germany, sends her 700 baht (approximately RM90) daily to support her.
However, due to her erratic behaviour and unemployment, her family has since cut ties with her.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident and legal action is expected to follow.
