What was supposed to be a memorable trip among family members turned into a tragedy after a woman was fatally run over by her son in Thailand.
According to Thai media outlet Thaiger, the incident took place near a temple in Udon Thani, Isaan Province last Friday (July 11).
Thai man runs mum over after stepping on accelerator by mistake
MGR Online reported that Nawi Songwannam and seven other family members had travelled from Samut Prakan province near Bangkok to Udon Thani during the long Buddhist holiday in a 11-seater SUV.
When they arrived at the Wat Pa Ban Tard Temple, Nawi was unable to find a parking spot due to the massive crowd. Thus, he dropped off his mother Pathum and sister Phon by the roadside so that they could begin with their almsgiving.
After dropping them off, Nawi made a U-turn and went to pick up his mother and sister. Unfortunately, he pressed the accelerator by mistake and rammed right into Pathum.
Thankfully, his sister, who was standing nearby, managed to jump out of the SUV’s way in time and avoided a similar fate.
Charged with reckless driving
When police arrived at the scene, they found an inconsolable Nawi sitting next to Pathum’s corpse while crying and blaming himself for her death.
He told local media that he wanted to bring his mother on a “happy holiday”, but now has to bring home her body instead.
Police later took Pathum’s body to Udon Thani Hospital for an autopsy and summoned Nawi and witnesses to give their statements.
Although no legal action was filed by the family, police nevertheless charged Nawi with reckless driving causing death, where he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to THB 200,000 (approx. RM26,200), or both.
