Squats, also known as ketuk ketampi, is a common form of punishment used by teachers to discipline misbehaving students in Southeast Asia.
A 13-year-old boy in Thailand was allegedly made to do 800 squats by a teacher for not handing in his homework on time, a move which left his family enraged.
Forced to do 800 squats
The incident was brought to light in a Facebook post by the boy’s father Adisak, who posted a photo of his son resting on a bed.
In the post’s caption, Adisak claimed that his son Otto was forced to perform 800 squats after he failed to hand in his homework.

When Otto returned home and complained of severe pain in his legs, he was rushed to the hospital and blood tests were done on him.
While initial results showed that his kidneys were still functioning as usual, the family is currently waiting for the muscle enzyme tests to see the extent of internal damage.
Dad slams “excessive” punishment
Doctors instructed Otto to avoid walking for the next three days, keep his legs elevated and drink at least three litres of water everyday to prevent further complications.
Unsurprisingly, Adisak didn’t take too kindly to how his son was punished, calling it “excessive” and suggested that other forms of punishment such as cleaning toilets or collecting litter be imposed instead.

He also shared how the entire family had been affected by the incident:
“I cannot go to sell my goods, and his younger sibling has to skip school. His mother is heartbroken as she is living far away and utterly helpless.
“I’d also like to ask the teacher this: how would you react if your son were to suffer kidney failure, acute muscle breakdown, or disability?”
Son not the first to be disciplined
Adisak told MS News that his son completed all 800 squats and revealed that he wasn’t the only one to be punished in a similar fashion.

He added the school nurse examined two female students who exhibited similar symptoms a week earlier. However, he couldn’t confirm whether they were disciplined by the same teacher.
As for Otto, he’s still in the midst of recovering as he still experiences pain in his legs and cannot stand and bear his own weight.
Adisak also said that he’s looking to take action against the teacher.
