A month’s work, gone in 2 weeks.
Not all teachers receive the same pay or benefits, and one Indonesian man’s story has highlighted just how tough it can be for contract educators.

The post quickly went viral and drew sympathy from Malaysians online.

He admitted that the money is barely enough to get by.

The salary only lasts for one or two weeks, the rest I rely on God, the Almighty, to provide,” he wrote in the video.

What is a contract teacher?

According to The Vocket, contract teachers known locally as tenaga pengajar honorer are paid based on the number of teaching hours, not a fixed monthly wage.

Their role, however, is no different from that of permanent teachers. They are still tasked with teaching classes, guiding students, and grading assignments.

The difference lies in the treatment they receive. Unlike full-time civil servants, contract teachers do not get access to the same benefits, allowances, or job security.

The man’s story has since sparked discussions online, with many pointing out the struggles faced by educators who dedicate their lives to teaching, but earn less than what most people spend in a week.
