Malaysian artist Namewee, also known as Wee Meng Chee, is currently in police custody, but Taiwanese media has suggested he may have tried to escape the country before being detained.
Taiwanese media claims JB ‘a hotspot for smuggling’
In a TV program by Taiwan’s EBC Financial News, which has over 1.18 million subscribers on YouTube, the hosts questioned Namewee’s movements during a 48-hour period when he reportedly disappeared from public view.
They raised the possibility that he might have attempted to flee Malaysia by heading south to Johor Bahru (JB), a city located just across the border from Singapore.

“JB is well known as a hotspot for smuggling and illegal border crossings,” one of the hosts claimed.
He also claimed that JB and Singapore are so close that “you don’t even need to cross a bridge—swimming takes just two minutes.”

They added that previous cases of individuals swimming across the border using makeshift floatation devices had been successful.
The Taiwanese media further questioned why Namewee went to JB instead of returning to his hometown of Muar if he was waiting for police to summon him.
“Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Muar takes roughly 2.5 hours, while getting to JB takes almost four hours,” he added.
An influencer from Taiwan had also warned that Namewee might try to leave the country after news of a police report against him surfaced.
This, along with the stop in JB, has fuelled speculation that an escape attempt may have been considered.
Despite the rumours, Namewee is now under police custody and the case is being investigated.
