Taiwanese Man Dies After Falling Onto Puchong LRT Station Tracks

This is not the first fatal incident this year.
What started as a typical Tuesday evening quickly turned tragic for LRT commuters when a Taiwanese man in his 60s was fatally struck by a train after falling onto the tracks at the Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT station on June 3.

According to an announcement on Rapid KL Facebook, emergency personnel were alerted to the incident at 5.54pm.

LRT operation temporarily suspended

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and efforts to retrieve his body were carried out by the fire department with support from the police and a medical team from Serdang Hospital.

The operator also said it is cooperating fully with authorities and coordinating with the Taiwanese embassy to provide necessary support to the deceased’s next of kin.

In an official statement, Rapid KL expressed deep regret and extended condolences to the victim’s family.

Not the first fatal incident

The incident caused major service disruptions along the Sri Petaling LRT line. Train operations between Bandar Puteri, Taman Perindustrian Puchong, Pusat Bandar Puchong, and IOI Puchong Jaya stations were temporarily suspended.

Alternative bus services were deployed to assist passengers, and train operations resumed later that evening at 8.52pm.

This is not the first fatal incident on the LRT system. Earlier this year, a visually impaired man died after falling onto the tracks at Titiwangsa LRT station. In 2018, another fatality occurred at the same Puchong station, when a man descended onto the tracks and was hit by a train.

Call for more safety measures

The recent tragedy has renewed public concern over passenger safety, particularly at stations that lack platform barriers. Some commuters have called for the installation of platform screen doors, similar to those already in use at MRT stations, to prevent future accidents.

Previously, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd had announced plans to introduce platform sensors and screen doors at LRT stations to enhance safety, especially for passengers with disabilities. However, with multiple incidents over the years, many are now questioning the pace of these safety improvements.

As investigations into the latest case continue, the public is once again urging rail authorities to prioritise preventive measures before another life is lost.
