Government financial aid schemes such as PTPTN loans, zakat assistance, and even free devices were introduced to ensure that students from low-income (B40) families do not fall behind in education.
However, one private university student from a T20 family recently voiced frustration on Threads, claiming that the system is being misused by some beneficiaries, creating an unfair gap between students from different income groups.
“I’m not rich — my parents are.”
The student wrote:
As a T20 child studying in a private university, it’s really stressful dealing with money.”
She said she wasn’t trying to discriminate, but felt that B40 students enjoyed many advantages such as PTPTN loans, zakat aid, and free devices — yet some allegedly spent the money on Apple products, branded handbags, and expensive shoes.

The student explained that while she acknowledges many B40 students genuinely work hard to support themselves and their families, she couldn’t help but feel jealous of those who misuse the system.
“I envy those who use the money just for personal comfort. It feels unfair because I’m not rich — my parents are. Should I cut ties with them first just to qualify for these aids?” she asked.
The student also revealed that she has six younger siblings, most of whom study at national or vocational schools, while one is enrolled in a fully residential school (SBP).
To cover her expenses, she works part-time because she has no other source of income.
“It’s tiring to think about money every day. I can’t always ask my parents. My part-time job helps with monthly expenses, but it’s not enough to cover PTPTN since I only got 30% of the loan,” she added.
Mixed reactions
Her post quickly went viral, sparking a heated debate among netizens. Some agreed with her point of view, saying that aid distribution should be reviewed to reflect household commitments rather than just income categories, while some others disagreed.
‘A lot of people bitter and disagree with your statement but I understand and yes, the government should consider better option for T20 by looking at the commitments too not just by the combined salary of both parents.’

‘Why be jealous when PTPTN is a loan? Just let others buy Apple products or whatever they want — because at the end of the day, they’re the ones who’ll have to pay it back anyway.’

‘Girl then you’re not T20, even your family isn’t T20. If you guys were really rich, you wouldn’t feel burdened lol.’
