The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced that starting 2026, students will no longer have to wear neckties to school, reported NST.
In a circular which was dated Dec 17 and signed by Director-General of Education Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, the move comes following MOE’s 2025 Special Professional Meeting held on Dec 8.

However, the ministry said wearing neckties are still allowed if the school and parents come an agreement over it.
“No party is permitted to coerce or pressure students regarding the wearing of neckties. The ministry is always mindful of parents’ need to prepare their children’s school necessities before the start of the new school session,” the circular read.
The policy took into account student needs such as Malaysia’s hot and humid climate that can make wearing neckties on a daily basis uncomfortable.
It was also carried out as a way to address financial burdens faced by certain families.
