Datuk Wira Haji Dr. Ameer Ali Mydin, Managing Director of Mydin Supermarket, has a different view on what it means to be truly rich—hint: it’s not about what’s in your garage.
‘I blame the influencers who love to show off their wealth’
During a recent pit stop on the Debonair Podcast, Dr. Ameer shared his thoughts on the growing trend of influencers flaunting their wealth.
Dr. Ameer didn’t hold back in expressing his discomfort with influencers who frequently showcase their luxurious lifestyles online.
“I blame the influencers, I really blame the influencers, these young fellas you know, who actually show off,” he stated during the podcast.
His frustration was palpable as he discussed the impact this behaviour can have on society, particularly on younger generations who might feel pressured to imitate such displays of wealth.
He was also quick to put the pedal to the metal on the idea that success is all about showing off your shiny toys.
“If I had to come here, wear this branded thing, it actually means I can’t afford it,” he quipped, signalling that true financial security doesn’t need a designer label.
Dr. Ameer didn’t just cruise by the topic—he dug deep, referencing none other than Elon Musk as a prime example.
Despite Musk’s wealth being out of this world, you won’t find him splurging on luxury brands just to fit in. For Dr. Ameer, it’s proof that you don’t need to be decked out in designer gear to be a star in the business world.

He’s all for influencers making a buck, but he’d prefer if they shifted gears and showed how they earned it, rather than revving up the envy with flashy displays.
“I keep telling these influencers, you make your money, it’s fine. Tell them how you made your money. But don’t show off that big car, that sports car, that big bungalow you’re living in,” he advised.
