The hype surrounding Squid Game is far from over, especially with the release of its new season.
Have you watched it yet? If you have, you might’ve noticed a few familiar games popping up in one of the rounds.
A quick heads-up: this article contains spoilers. So, if you haven’t watched it yet and hate spoilers, you might want to stop here.
In one of the rounds, contestants played games that many Malaysians hold close to their hearts—games we grew up playing during our childhood.
Remember selipar baling? They played something similar in the series called Flying Stone, which is like what we used to play.
And how could we forget our beloved batu Seremban? Interestingly, in Squid Game, it’s called Gong-gi, which is also known as Korean Jacks. Gong-gi (or Seven Stones) is a popular Korean children’s game.
What truly caught Malaysians’ attention was when Cho Hyun-ju, also known as Player 120 and played by Korean actor Park Sung-hoon, brought batu Seremban to life in a video shared by Netflix Malaysia on their TikTok page.
For promotional purposes, he showcased his skills at the game using batu Seremban sets made of batik fabric—just like the ones we used to play with as kids.

But here’s the best part. In the video, Park Sung-hoon mentioned, “Batu seremban, this game is from Malaysia and Singapore.”
Park Sung-hoon managed to complete all four levels of batu Seremban without a single fail.
Even he was surprised by his flawless run. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, he ended the video with a heartwarming message for Malaysians: “I love you, Malaysia.”

Seeing one of our childhood favourites featured in such a global hit is truly a proud moment.
