  • Starting date: The VEP system will be in effect from October 1, 2024.
  • Initial period (Oct 1 – Dec 31, 2024):
    • You can still enter and leave Malaysia even if you have unpaid traffic fines.
    • The focus during this time will be on informing drivers and encouraging them to pay any outstanding fines.
  • Full enforcement (From Jan 1, 2025):
    • If you have unpaid fines, you’ll face stricter consequences.
    • Penalties could include fines up to RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months.
  • Current unpaid fines:
    • Singaporean drivers currently owe around RM3.5 million in unpaid traffic fines in Malaysia, with a total of 35,011 summonses outstanding.
  • What you should do:
    • Check if you have any unpaid fines and settle them before the full enforcement starts in January 2025.

The new VEP system is designed to track foreign vehicles and ensure that traffic fines are paid. During the first few months, the system will focus on raising awareness and helping drivers get up to date with their fines. However, starting January 2025, the rules will become much stricter, reported NST.
