Shopping trends among Singaporeans have reached a new level as they swap plastic and paper bags for full-sized luggage bags when visiting malls in Johor Bahru (JB).
According to a report by New Straits Times (NST), many Singaporean shoppers are opting for wheeled suitcases instead of traditional shopping bags to carry their purchases.
This shift not only adds convenience but has also become a unique shopping trend.
From plastic bags to luggage
In the past, Singaporeans often struggled with carrying multiple plastic or paper bags filled with their shopping hauls.
Now, by using carry-on luggage, they can shop more efficiently and comfortably.
I used to return from JB looking like a hunchback,” joked a Singaporean shopper who identified herself as Uma.
“Now, I can shop in peace. My suitcase fits everything, from clothes to snacks,” she added with a laugh.

Beyond convenience, this trend is also becoming a fashion statement. Luggage brands are taking advantage of this phenomenon by promoting their products as the ultimate “shopping companion.”
With trendy colors and sleek designs, wheeled suitcases are now an essential shopping accessory.
Mixed reactions from local shoppers & retailers
While this trend is widely embraced by Singaporean shoppers, reactions from local JB shoppers and business owners have been mixed.
A staff member at an optical store in Johor Bahru City Square noted that large suitcases often create space constraints, making it difficult for other customers to move around.
Tourists with big luggage often block escalators, making it inconvenient for others,” said a Malaysian shopper, who wished to remain anonymous.

However, some local businesses see it as an opportunity to boost sales.
“They buy more, so we don’t complain,” said a clothing store owner.
Whether this trend will spread to other Malaysian cities remains uncertain. For now, Singaporeans have transformed shopping trips into an experience that closely resembles travel.
