For most people, mixed rice or chap fan usually features dishes that are considered affordable by the general public and would rarely offer “high-end” dishes.
However, an economy rice stall in Singapore is garnering attention for offering premium dishes such as lobster and salmon, which are priced at below S$6 (approximately RM20).
Premium seafood at economic prices
According to China Press, the stall is located at a coffee shop on the ground floor of Block 125 at Toa Payoh Lorong 1, where it has been operating for nearly two months.
At the stall, salmon is served daily and is priced at S$4.50 (RM15) per piece, while other special seafood items such as fried grouper and lobster are sold from time to time, with the latter being sold for just S$6 (RM20), significantly cheaper than the market rate.
The stall is jointly run by Huang and Chen Jiawei (transliteration), who met while working in the food and beverage (F&B) industry.
When asked the reason why they first opened the stall, the duo said they wanted to break tradition by offering what is considered “high-end ingredients” to give customers a chance to enjoy a wider variety of dishes.
Keeping prices affordable
Huang also revealed the secret behind the stall’s ability to offer salmon and lobster dishes at low prices: maintaining a strong relationship with their suppliers.
Chen added that she and Huang would also compare prices with other stalls nearby to ensure their offerings are competitively priced.
“Because we import ingredients directly from overseas suppliers, we can keep the prices affordable.
“We also conduct on-site inspections to ensure the ingredient quality is on par with market standards,” she said.
