A clip showing a woman claiming that Singapore ‘owed’ its existence to China has recently gone viral online, where it garnered mixed reactions from netizens.
The 2-minute verbal altercation occurred after the man behind the camera confronted the Chinese national for allegedly cutting the queue at Universal Studios Singapore (USS).
‘If it wasn’t for China, S’pore won’t exist!’
In the TikTok clip shared on Aug 18, it showed the man filming the woman, who was at USS with her three children.
The woman is also seen filming the man in return while holding her child with one arm and asking the man in Mandarin, “Do you think only you can film me?”

As the verbal sparring continued, it then took a rather odd turn as nationalism was to thrown into the mix as well, with the woman retorting aggressively: “What’s wrong with Chinese people? Do they embarrass you? Aren’t you ethnically Chinese?”
If there were no Chinese people, Singapore would not count for anything.”
This didn’t impress the man at all, who responded sarcastically, “Yeah, Chinese people are the greatest. China best.”
An older man, believed to be the woman’s family member, later enters the frame and also takes out his own handphone to film the altercation.

Reactions
In the comment section, some slammed the woman for not “doing as the Romans do” when in a foreign country such as following its rules.

On the other hand, some felt there wasn’t a need to blow the matter out of proportion as it was just a minor matter.

Meanwhile, some felt it was unfair to stereotype all Mainland China people as disrespectful individuals, with one writing that “the majority are well mannered”.

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) later released a statement about the incident, saying that the matter was “resolved”.
“At RWS, we uphold the values of courtesy, respect and queuing etiquette, and expect our guests to treat fellow visitors with consideration to ensure everyone can have an enjoyable visit,” it added.
