Your dedication and effort are what truly matter, not the medal.
Malaysia’s gold medal hope in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Dato’ Azizulhasni Awang, issued an emotional apology to the nation as the event came to an end.

The seasoned cyclist, who has been a beacon of hope for Malaysia, was disqualified for overtaking the pacer before the pacer had left the track, an error that shattered the country’s dream of clinching its first-ever Olympic gold medal.

“Throughout the preparation process and journey to Paris, I constantly held onto a positive image, envisioning that the finish in Paris would be a sweet story for Malaysia and especially for my career,” he reflected.

Disqualification

However, the reality of his disqualification struck him hard, leaving him in a state of disbelief and speechlessness. The moment he saw his name marked with “disqualification,” time seemed to stop.

“My body, which was warm and ready to race, suddenly turned cold and stiff,” he described, painting a picture of the sudden and overwhelming emotions he experienced.

Despite hoping for a miracle that would allow him to continue in the repechage, his hopes were ultimately dashed.

Dato’ Hasniawang also shared the deep sorrow he felt for his coach, John Beasley, who was visibly shaken by the turn of events.

“The saddest part was remembering the reaction of coach John Beasley, who was so emotional and couldn’t hold back his feelings,” he said, highlighting the collective disappointment felt by his entire team.
