The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is always a highly anticipated spectacle, marking the beginning of a global event that unites countries in the spirit of sportsmanship and competition.
With each host city striving to outdo the last, the pressure to deliver a memorable and captivating ceremony is immense. The 2024 Olympics in Paris aimed to break new ground with its innovative approach, but for many Malaysian sports fans, it was a missed opportunity.
In a bold move, the organisers chose to hold the ceremony along the iconic Seine River, diverging from the traditional stadium setting for the first time in Olympic history.
While this innovative approach aimed to showcase the beauty of Paris, it unfortunately fell short for many viewers. Fans were particularly displeased with the boat parade, which some felt did not capture the grandeur expected of an Olympic opening.
National contingent’s appearance falls short
The Malaysian contingent made their entrance in the stunning ‘The Malaya’ attire designed by Rizman Ruzaini.
While the outfits were a highlight, the camera coverage failed to properly showcase them, with fleeting and distant shots that left viewers wanting more. This oversight was a significant letdown for fans who had eagerly awaited the moment.
Onboard the boat representing Malaysia were six athletes and four officials. Diver Bertrand Rhodict Lises and sailor Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif proudly carried the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang.
They were accompanied by fellow athletes Nur Dhabitah Sabri (diving), Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy (sailing), Ashley Lau (golf), and Tan Rouxin (swimming), as well as delegations from Malawi and the Maldives.
‘I sacrificed my sleep for nothing’
The dissatisfaction among Malaysian fans quickly manifested on social media. One fan expressed their frustration, saying, “Been waiting for more than 1 hour and they just gave us a few seconds of screen time? I sacrificed my sleep for nothing and I HAVE WORK AT 7AM.”
Another fan criticised the planning and execution of the ceremony, stating, “Worst Olympic opening ceremony ever… super boring. Such a waste of beautiful outfits, but they didn’t match the occasion. Where are the lights to showcase the gold colour? @MSNMALAYSIA and @KBSMalaysia didn’t check the opening details before choosing the outfits for the contingent to wear?”
Praises amid criticism
However, there were many who praised the ceremony for its innovative spirit and stunning visuals.
Supporters appreciated the picturesque backdrop of the Seine River and the creative use of boats for the parade, which they felt added a unique charm to the event.
Some viewers found the performances captivating and a refreshing departure from traditional ceremonies, applauding the organizers for their bold vision.
