Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that leave the biggest impact.
A Malaysian woman shared a heartwarming story about her considerate neighbours, reminding many netizens what being a good neighbour is really about.
In her post, the woman recalled receiving a phone call from her Chinese neighbour ahead of an upcoming wedding.
The neighbour politely asked if it would be alright for the wedding tent to extend “one foot” into the space in front of her gate.
At first I wondered what kind of ‘one foot’ it would be,” she joked.
When she later saw it in person, she couldn’t help but laugh.
“It turned out to be more like an ant’s foot,” she said, referring to how minimal the space taken actually was.

Firecracker debris cleaning initiative
The thoughtfulness did not stop there.
She shared that during a previous festive celebration, some firecracker debris ended up drifting into her porch.
Instead of brushing it off, the neighbour’s husband waited until she got home just so he could enter the porch and help sweep it up.
If it’s just a little, we’ll clean it ourselves,” she joked. “If it’s a lot, maybe we can ask for the full sweep-and-wash porch package.”
Even renovations came with permission first
The woman also recalled how the same neighbour once planned to raise their wall and made sure to ask for her permission beforehand.
On top of that, they even offered to paint her side of the wall as well.
Truly grateful to have neighbours like this,” she wrote.
Kindness extended across the street
The good neighbourly gestures were not limited to just one household.
She also shared that the neighbour living opposite her house, who is also non-Muslim, once invited her over during Deepavali.
To make sure she could eat comfortably, they thoughtfully ordered food from a nearby mamak stall in the neighbourhood, so she would not feel hesitant about eating the food.
On top of that, the neighbour’s mother prepared homemade chai masala that impressed her so much she ended up asking for the recipe.
‘This is how neighbours should be’
The post struck a chord online, quickly gaining 5.9k likes, 425 comments, and 127 shares at the time of writing.
Many netizens said they hoped to one day have neighbours as considerate as hers, while others shared similar stories of living harmoniously with those around them.
At the end of the day, it was not about how much space was used. It was about respect, asking first, and the small gestures that make a neighbourhood feel like home.
