Sinar Harian penalised for false statement on IGP

Sinar Karangkraf Sdn. Bhd., the publisher of Sinar Harian, was fined for a separate offence involving an Instagram post.

The post included misleading information about the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), falsely linking him to a political party through a leadership position.

Legal action taken under the Communications Act

Both cases were investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which deals with improper use of network facilities.

The compound fines were issued under Section 243 of the same Act after approval from the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).

MCMC reminded all media outlets and social media users to ensure accuracy in their reporting, especially when it involves national symbols or institutions.

The agency warned that spreading false content could affect national peace and public confidence in authorities.

To address such issues, MCMC said it would enhance enforcement and implement digital literacy campaigns to preserve national harmony and stability.

Jalur Gemilang must always be displayed properly and respectfully,” MCMC stressed in the statement.
