A woman in Singapore is at a loss over what to do after she and her neighbours were sent funeral flower by loan sharks in Jurong West.
The cause of her troubles? It was all thanks to a friend who used her identity card (IC) to borrow money from the illegal moneylenders.
IC used by friend for loan
In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, the woman named Zhuo (transliteration), she said her friend Lan was a student at her husband’s music school.

She revealed that she sent a photo of her IC to Lan years ago in order to help her in purchasing health products.
But unbeknownst to Zhuo, Lan instead used her IC to borrow money from loan sharks, thus kickstarting a cycle of harassment in 2024 and a string of police reports by Zhuo.
Zhuo added that although she gave the loan sharks the contact number of Lan’s sister, the latter continued to send intimidating texts.

Receives funeral flowers & ‘RIP’ sign
Things came to a frightening point on the midnight of Jul 8, where Zhuo’s son found funeral flowers in front of the music school.
Along with it was a message written in English, where it showed Zhuo’s full name and the words ‘Rest in peace’. CCTV footage later showed it was sent at 10pm the previous night.
In the afternoon, the loan sharks told Zhuo that another two funeral flowers were sent to her neighbour and a beauty salon above her unit.
One of them had Zhuo’s photo and the Chinese words “路好走” (Rest in peace), while the other displayed Lan’s photo and name.

Zhuo told Shin Min that she was puzzled by the loan sharks’ willingness to spend a total of S$332 (approx. RM1,100) on the funeral flowers when they were unable to recoup their money from Lan.
She also said CCTV footage showed the flowers were delivered by an elderly couple who seemed confused, as there was no wake to be seen and they kept checking their phone to make sure they had the right location.
Friendship ended
Zhuo said she has since ended her friendship with Lan after several failed attempts to talk to her about the harassment caused by her unpaid debt.
She added her husband had also reached out to Lan but claimed Lan was unwilling to resolve the situation.

Lan said she could not do anything and was ‘very tired’, and even said she ‘might as well die’. However, this isn’t her first time saying this.
“I even went to the Community Mediation Centre about this, but Lan accused me of harassment. At the time, the judge had advised her to solve the problems that she had created,” lamented Zhuo.
