SG Woman Finds Plastic Bits Inside Shaved Ice, Demands RM53,000 In Compensation

The shop called her demand "outrageous".
Whenever we have our meal or dessert outside, the last thing we’d want is to find foreign objects inside while eating.

A woman in Singapore recently discovered plastic bits inside her dessert and demanded a whopping amount of compensation for her unpleasant experience.

SG woman finds plastic bits inside shaved ice

Shin Min Daily News reported that the woman surnamed Lin (transliteration) was tucking into a bowl of shaved ice dessert with a friend on June 11 at around 8pm when she felt a hard lump in her mouth.

Believing that it was just crushed ice, she proceeded to swallow it. But when she bit into something hard, she suspected something was amiss and spat it out.

To her horror, it turned out to be a piece of plastic and realised she probably had swallowed something similar not too long ago.

Lin told the Chinese daily that she went to inform the workers about it, who were at a loss over what to do and couldn’t get a hold of their manager.

She then asked them to check their durian purée, where more plastic bits were allegedly found.

Blame shifted to supplier

When Lin called the shop’s main branch, the shop denied the existence of plastic in her dessert but was offered a refund or a replacement. They also assured her that they will look into the matter.

She also claimed that the shop pushed the blame to the supplier.

When contacted by Shin Min, the shop owner Zhu (transliteration) expressed puzzlement over the matter, saying plastic fragments most likely didn’t come from the ice machine as it crushes ice into very fine particles.

“As for the box which contained the durian purée, it had not been damaged. We also checked the durian purée in all our outlets following the incident and found no issues with them.

“Furthermore, the process of handling the purée at our central kitchen does not involve any plastic. We have since contacted the supplier for clarification as the durian purée was provided to us by them,” she explained.

Zhu also told Shin Min that Lin demanded S$16,000 (approx. RM52,900) in compensation — S$8,000 each for her and her friend.

While she said the shop was more than willing to take responsibility and pay for medical expenses, Zhu called the amount “outrageous” and said neither Lin nor her friend had produced medical reports.

Lin later admitted that she did request for such an amount but claimed the shop was the one who first brought up the matter of compensation.

She added that while she’s okay for now, she still habours fear that she might suffer from adverse side effects in the future from swallowing plastic, adding:

If surgery or gastroscopy is required, it won’t be cheap.”

Lin also accused the shop of being insincere by requesting for the matter to be resolved privately but refused to pay the compensation amount she asked for.
