Canes, also commonly known as the rotan among many, is usually the instrument of choice when it comes to disciplining naughty kids at school.
Instead of using it on a misbehaving child, a man in Singapore used it to injure his girlfriend after she repeatedly asked him whether he was being unfaithful to her.
Lived together after meeting online
According to a report by Shin Min Daily News, the 36-year-old suspect, who worked as a security manager, met the 25-year-old victim via a dating app in Aug 2022, which subsequently led to a romantic relationship.
After two months, the victim moved into the suspect’s home. But everything started going downhill from there and she began to doubt the suspect’s loyalty to her.

On Oct 18 at around 9am, the suspect was lounging on his bed after finishing his night shift when the victim burst into the room and confronted him.
An argument ensued when she asked him whether he was cheating on her. She also demanded that he delete photos of her but he refused to budge.
As the victim continued bombarding him with questions about his alleged infidelity, the suspect lost his cool and grabbed a black box which had a rattan cane inside before whipping her with it.
Although the victim cried in pain while filming the beating with her phone, it didn’t stop the suspect, who continued the caning.
When he finally stopped, he showed the victim his phone, adding he had already deleted her photos.
Sustained injuries from caning
After the beating, the victim packed her belongings and returned to Malaysia at 1pm on the same day. She later lodged a police report after returning to Singapore the next day.
She was sent to the hospital when the officers saw her injuries on her lips, face, arms and left hand. However, she was discharged from the hospital after three days of medical leave on the same day.
The suspect was eventually charged with voluntarily causing hurt, which he pleaded guilty to in court and was sentenced to 10 days in jail.
However, he requested that the sentence be delayed by a week, which was allowed by the court.
