If you saw your car parked right next to another car that was in flames, what would you do? Would you rush in to save your vehicle or let it be swallowed by the flames instead?
A man in Singapore left firefighters, police, and netizens both in shock and awe after a viral clip showed him risking his life to save his car which was parked next to a car that had gone up in flames.
SG man steers car away from burning vehicle while clad in underwear
In the clip shared by @sgvirality on Instagram last Thursday (May 1), it showed a car burning away at an open car parking lot while several Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police stood nearby.
Suddenly, a man who wore nothing but his underwear is seen entering his car located next to the burning vehicle while ignoring yells of “Don’t drive!” and “Come out!” from the authorities.
After entering his car, the man calmly drives his car away from the burning vehicle, much to the shock of the authorities and the person filming the incident, where he could be heard calling the man “crazy” for his antics.
After the daring “rescue” of his car, the man is stopped by several SCDF personnel, who furiously banged on his car door while telling him to come out.
According to The Straits Times (ST), the incident took place at the carpark of Block 111 McNair Road at around 8pm.
“A police officer intervened to knock on his car door to get his attention, and to direct him away from the ongoing SCDF operations,” said Singapore police in a statement.
The SCDF added the fire was put out using a water jet and no injuries were reported.
Netizens criticise police for ‘overreacting’
In the comment section, netizens were on the man’s side in the incident and called out the police for their over-the-top reaction towards his act of saving his car.
‘If I run into my house to save something important to me like my cat, will the police also smack me for it?’
‘The owner of the car just saved the situation from spreading, Police should shake his hands instead of knocking on the door.’
