Upset that his grandmother declined to give him some money to buy cigarettes, a man in Singapore decided to rob a store in order to get the cash.
However, the attempted robbery failed and he was eventually arrested for the crime, where he was sentenced to jail and a caning.
Asked money from grandma for cigarettes
According to a report by The Straits Times (ST), Harry Chia Yin Xiang wanted to buy cigarettes and called his grandma for money when he realised he didn’t have enough cash to purchase it himself.
However, she refused, leaving Chia feeling slighted and upset.
The accused felt that his grandmother did not care for him, and (felt that) it would be better for him if he got arrested by the police,” the DPPs told the court.
Held metal rod to cashier’s neck in robbery
Thus, at 3am on April 14, 2024, Chia went to a convenience store in Choa Cho Kang and told the cashier that he had stolen a bottle of green tea.
When the cashier told Chia that action wouldn’t be taken if he returned the drink, Chia left and later returned with a metal rod.
Holding the metal rod against the cashier’s neck, Chia demanded him to open the cash register.
In response, the cashier said it could only be opened with a purchase and informed Chia that the store had several CCTVs inside.
Chia finally left the scene following much convincing from the cashier and was arrested by police within two hours after the attempted robbery.
Sentenced to jail & caning
In court today, Chia pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to commit robbery.
He also pleaded guilty to one count each of harassment and being in possession of a knuckleduster in separate incidents.
As such, he was sentenced to two years and six months in jail and 12 cane strokes for all three charges.
