A man in Singapore left his wife with multiple broken bones following a verbal disagreement over how the funds from a condominium sale should be used.
40-year-old Au Yong Khin Mun pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt to his wife and was ordered to be caned and serve time in prison.
Sharp disagreement over condo sale funds
According to CNA, Au Yong and his wife were having breakfast at a canteen located in the Singapore University of Technology and Design in Changi after dropping their four-year-old twin daughters at school on Dec 2, 2024.

While eating, Au Yong suggested to his wife that they use some of the proceeds from the sale of a condominium unit they owned to pay off his credit card bills.
However, she disagreed and said it should be used to purchase a Housing Board (HDB) flat so that the family could have a place of their own instead of staying with her parents.
Hit & threw wife to the ground
Angered by her countersuggestion, Au Yong tried to slap his wife from across the table but failed.
He then walked over to her side of the table and hit her back and head several times.

After Au Yong returned to his seat, his wife tried to leave the scene and had her back facing him.
He then took the opportunity to hit her head with a cup of iced coffee, strike her head twice with his plate of food, hit her head twice with his hand, and knee her twice in the back.
Au Yong then finished it off by grabbing his wife’s arms from behind and threw her to the ground, resulting in a fractured left clavicle, ribs and bones around her eyes.
Jailed and caned
In court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Suriya Prakash asked the court to sentence Au Yong to between 24 and 26 months in jail and six cane strokes, noting that he was “especially cowardly” in waiting for his wife’s back to be turned on him before attacking her.

The court was also told that divorce proceedings were underway following the assault.
Au Yong was sentenced to 23 months and two weeks’ jail as well as two cane strokes.
