Unhappy that their 21-year-old daughter was in a romantic relationship with a man whom they vehemently disapproved, a Singaporean couple went out of their way to tear them apart.
When that failed and their daughter proceeded to move in to her boyfriend’s house, the couple went over there and scattered joss paper at his door, leading to police being called to the scene.
Disapproved of daughter’s relationship
A reporter from Shin Min Daily News went to the flat located at Toa Payoh on July 22 at around 1pm, where several police officers were seen speaking the visibly emotional couple.

The girl’s father Yang (transliteration), later told the reporter that his daughter Chen, a polytechnic student, had been dating the man for years and initially didn’t have objections.
However, as time passed, Yang said he and his wife’s displeasure towards Chen’s boyfriend began to grow.
He doesn’t have a proper job and has a serious skin condition. We opposed their relationship but she didn’t listen, so our relationship became increasingly strained.”
Following multiple fights over the issue, Chen stayed at her boyfriend’s more often, which exacerbated the tension further.

SG couple toss joss paper at doorstep of flat
After Chen failed to return home after promising to do so on July 21, Yang went to her boyfriend’s flat and confronted him.
The next day, Yang and his wife went to the flat again and tried pleading with Chen to go home. But she refused and contacted the police.
In response, Yang and his wife tossed joss paper in front of the flat, along with two cans of beer and an empty bottle of wine.

A red packet that contained a handwritten note about the cutting of ties was also left front of the unit.
Yang later admitted the joss paper was thrown outside the unit as an attempt to provoke his daughter and her boyfriend into opening the door.
After much mediation, police told Yang and his wife that their daughter was already 21 years old. They also managed to convince Chen to go home.
‘I feel suffocated’
Chen later returned to her boyfriend’s house and explained to reporters why she did so.
The environment at home wasn’t good and I was under tremendous stress. I understand that my parents care for me, but I feel oppressed and need a bit of breathing space.

“I hope my family will be more understanding of my situation and I’ll also do my best return home more often,” she said.
As for her boyfriend, he told reporters that he has been trying to be in Yang’s good graces and always respected him as Chen’s father.
He also added that he hopes Yang will not try to destroy the relationship again.
