[UPDATED] Seremban Mamak Staff Allegedly Washes Leftover Ingredients To Serve Customers The Next Day

Health authorities are now probing the incident.
Mamak stalls are undoubtedly the place of choice for Malaysians who want to grab a quick bite or hang out with friends late at night. However, they have also long been known for their appalling lack of hygiene.

A netizen recently took to social media and made a shocking claim against a mamak stall in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, about its food handling practices.

Leftover ingredients allegedly washed

In a Facebook post, the netizen said he witnessed a troubling sight at a mamak stall located opposite the Palm Mall bus stop at 12.18am yesterday (Feb 3).

According to him, he saw a staff allegedly washing leftover food such as chicken, mutton, and tofu before separating them into trays.

Disgusted by what he saw, the netizen confronted the staff and was told that the food was washed so that it could be resold the following day.

When the netizen protested and said it placed public health at risk, another worker attempted to brush it off but eventually admitted that the leftover food were going to be re-cooked.

The worker also claimed that such practices “weren’t dangerous”.

At the end of the post, the netizen urged the health authorities to investigate the incident so that the public’s wellbeing will not be jeopardised.

Ordered to close for 2 weeks

Not long after the post went viral, the Negeri Sembilan State Health Department (JKNNS) announced that it would be conducting an inspection on the mamak stall, reported NST.

Officers found multiple violations, such as operating a food business without approval from the Seremban City Council, displaying unapproved advertisements, poor cleanliness management, and failing to set a toilet cleaning schedule.

Cockroaches were also found at the mamak and the management couldn’t produce its staff’s typhoid vaccination records and food-handling course certificates.

Sin Chew Daily reported that the mamak stall was ordered to close for 14 days and fined.
