Selangor PAS Promises Not To Ban Lottery Outlets If It Wins Upcoming State Election

Its commissioner claimed the party has "changed".
Selangor PAS has made a bold pledge to voters that it will not outlaw lottery outlets within the state if it emerges victorious in the next state election.

The pledge was made by state party commissioner Ab Halim Tamuri, who paid a visit to the China Press office on Monday (Oct 6).

‘No ban on lottery outlets’

Speaking to the Chinese daily during the visit, Ab Halim expressed confidence that Perikatan Nasional (PN), the coalition which PAS is a member of, is not far from its goal in becoming the state government of Pahang, Perak, and Selangor.

He also promised that PAS will not outlaw lottery outlets in Selangor if it is successful in its bid in becoming the state government in the next state election.

“Selangor’s population is multiracial, unlike the PAS-led states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis, which are predominantly Malay. Therefore, policies must be adapted to local demographics.

“It’s impossible for PAS to come to power one day and shut down lottery outlets the next. We will definitely discuss, consult, and evaluate before taking action. We are a democratic country, and consensus is necessary before making any decision,” he said.

When asked whether PAS was capable of governing urban constituencies, Ab Halim said his experience as Paya Jaras assemblyman is a prime example that it wouldn’t be an issue.

“My own constituency is a mixed urban–rural area, so I don’t think governing urban areas is a problem.

“Voters today choose based on candidates, not just parties. PAS has recruited many highly educated professionals from various backgrounds. We combine religious and academic expertise to build a better government.”

‘PAS is a party for all’

While Ab Halim conceded that PAS continues to face misunderstanding particularly among non-Muslims, he reiterated that PAS has undergone much changes over the past 20 years.

We now promote the concept of ‘PAS for All,’ aiming to safeguard everyone’s welfare regardless of religion. No one will be left behind.

“I’m also aware that Islamophobia exists, but that because it largely comes from misinformation and misunderstanding. PAS is working to close the gap through dialogues and engagement sessions,” he said.
