Sarawak is set to export electricity to the Philippines through Sabah, with the project expected to begin next year.
Strategic move to supply ASEAN power needs
According to the Sarawak Government, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg confirmed that the decision was made following discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The Prime Minister requested that we transmit electricity from Sabah to southern Philippines.
This means we will be supplying power to ASEAN, which is our advantage. All investments require energy, and Malaysia—especially Sarawak—has the upper hand in this sector.
This will attract more investors,” he said during a banking industry Chinese New Year dinner in Kuching on Monday.
Part of ASEAN Power Grid initiative
The project aligns with the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, reinforcing Sarawak’s vision to become the region’s “battery of ASEAN” by leveraging its energy resources.
The electricity exported from Miri will be generated by Petros (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad) through a 500MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant currently under construction in Lutong.
Sarawak has already invested RM2 billion in energy infrastructure, incorporating Mitsubishi’s hydrogen and steam technology, marking the first use of such technology in the region.
