If you’ve ever tuned in to RTM’s news broadcasts, chances are you’ve noticed Tan Lee Bee the expressive sign language interpreter who brings every update to life for Malaysia’s OKU (Persons with Disabilities) community.
Her dynamic interpreting style has made her a familiar and respected figure on Malaysian television.
Recognised for years of service

Recently, Tan became the subject of the news herself when she was awarded the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) medal in conjunction with the Official Birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, on June 2.
The award recognises individuals for their outstanding service to the nation, and at 64 years old, Tan’s years of dedication were finally recognised on a national stage.
Interpreting news about herself
In a full-circle moment, Tan was seen interpreting the very news report that celebrated her award.
A TikTok video posted by @azharanditahir captured the wholesome moment, showing Tan translating the news about her own achievement while on air.
The caption read, “When you end up interpreting news about yourself. Congratulations,” sparking widespread appreciation online.

To put her award in perspective, she was one of 16 recipients of the AMN at the ceremony.
The event also honoured high-ranking officials, including Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar and Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, who were both conferred the Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN), carrying the prestigious title “Tan Sri.”
‘She truly deserves this award’

Following the viral video, netizens poured into the comments to express their admiration for Tan’s contributions and her well-deserved recognition. Many highlighted how her role has inspired others in the field of sign language interpreting and special education.
“Hopefully this recognition inspires more people to venture into special education and sign language interpreting.”
“Incredible… this is what real contribution looks like.”
“Feeling so proud of her, she truly deserves this award. Congratulations.”
