Malaysian-born comedian and actor Ronny Chieng has officially become a United States citizen after passing the country’s naturalization interview and test, he recently revealed.
The news came with an unexpected surprise — a heartfelt congratulation from none other than comedy legend Bill Murray during a taping of The Daily Show, where Chieng currently serves as host.
Officially an American citizen
In a now-viral video, Chieng was seen answering an off-air question from a member of the audience when Murray suddenly appeared on stage and walked up to him with a big smile.
They say you’re very excited today because you just found out you’re officially an American citizen,” Murray said, drawing cheers from the crowd.
Chieng nodded and replied, “Yeah, it’s been a crazy, crazy day. Thank you, thank you so much.”

Murray then gave Chieng a warm hug and even planted a kiss on his cheek before giving a salute and exiting the stage to roaring applause.
Was asked 100 questions to attain citizenship
Chieng later confirmed the news to the audience, saying, “It’s a wild experience becoming a U.S. citizen on the same day you’re supposed to interview Bill Murray. What a long day.”
He shared more about the process, jokingly adding, “I had to go for the interview, and they asked like 100 questions — questions I’m sure none of you can answer.
I had to memorise how many colonies there are, the states, and who the current president is. It was really tough.”
Originally from Johor Bahru, Malaysian-American Ronny Chieng had to renounce his Malaysian citizenship to become a US citizen, as Malaysia doesn’t permit dual nationality, unlike the US.
