With inflation making its mark on food prices and the cost of living, there’s bound to be a price hike every now and then. But when exactly should the line be drawn if the price’s too exorbitant?
A man in Singapore expressed his dissatisfaction over being charged way too much for a cup of iced lemon tea which he described as “syrup diluted with water”.
Unhappy with RM9 iced lemon tea, calls price “exorbitant”
Speaking to media outlet Stomp about the incident, the man named MaxRoh said he went to FoodHub located at Block 449 Clementi Avenue 3 on Jan 16 for lunch, where he was approached by a drinks vendor.
I just ordered an iced lemon tea but when she brought it to me, I was charged $2.80 (approx. RM9) for it! I had no choice but to pay up.
“I was appalled and approached the staff at the drinks stall to ask what was the reason for charging such an exorbitant price.
“In response, she (the staff) simply shrugged and said everywhere is expensive now. Please note that this is just a coffee shop, not a food court,” he fumed.
MaxRoh also added that the iced lemon tea wasn’t even worth its price, saying, “It’s just syrup diluted with water and filled with a lot of ice. It wasn’t even real iced lemon tea.”
Vows to avoid kopitiam
MaxRoh expressed anger over business owners using inflation as an excuse to suck more money from customers’ pockets but give them sub-par products.
He added that he was oblivious to the iced lemon tea’s price before ordering and was left with little choice but to pay for it.
Before anyone comes up with the typical ‘if expensive, why you still buy’, response, please note that I had no choice because I wasn’t even aware of the price before I placed my order and I had no choice because I was dining in.”
He also said he won’t be stepping into the kopitiam again, declaring, “I have learnt my lesson. You have been warned.”
