‘RM42 For Pastries & Coffee?’ – Netizen Finds Food Prices In M’sia More Expensive Than S’pore

Really meh??
Malaysia and Singapore are known for our vibrant food scenes, offering everything from street food to upscale cafe dining but recent debates suggest that eating out in Malaysia might not be as affordable as it seems.

A social media user recently sparked a heated discussion after claiming that food prices in Malaysia, particularly in the Klang Valley, are actually more expensive compared to Singapore when considering the average income.

According to the user, they paid RM42 for a few pastries and a coffee at a cafe and felt that dining out in Malaysia is not as budget-friendly as many believe.

They stated that in Singapore, a similar order at a good cafe would cost around SGD20 (approximately RM63).

While the price in Ringgit appears lower, they argued that it is still more expensive when compared to the average Malaysian salary, which is slightly over RM5,000 per month, whereas the average salary in Singapore reaches SGD6,000 per month.

Netizens react with mixed opinions

The post drew a variety of responses, with some agreeing and others disagreeing with the claim.

One user countered the comparison, stating:

“Your comparison is completely flawed. Comparing ‘dollar to dollar’ between two countries with vastly different economies and purchasing power makes no sense.

“RM42 is around SGD12, which is significantly lower than the SGD20+ you mentioned for a similar meal in Singapore. If anything, this proves that Malaysia is cheaper, not more expensive.” the netizen shared.

Meanwhile, another netizen who has lived in both countries agreed with the original post:

“Well, I’ve lived in both Singapore and Malaysia, and I agree with you. I don’t get why people keep saying the cost of living in Singapore is insane when, in comparison, having to pay RM20+ for a cake in Malaysia feels even crazier considering the average salary there.”

Another comment highlighted the relativity of affordability based on salaries:

“I understand what you’re trying to say. Sometimes I think, RM18 fried rice is indeed expensive in RM sense considering the amount of salary a normal worker is getting, but if you convert to S$, it’s only around S$6, which is affordable for Singaporeans.”

This debate sheds light on how purchasing power and income levels play a crucial role in determining the affordability of food.

While the direct price comparison may show that food in Malaysia costs less, the reality of lower wages and overall affordability remains a concern for many.

So, what do you think? Is eating out in Malaysia becoming less affordable, or is the comparison between the two countries unfair?
