An educated and retired businessman in his 70s has fallen prey to a sophisticated scam, as detailed in a warning post by MP Lim Lip Ying on Facebook.
The elderly man, seeking companionship in the quiet of retirement with his wife, became unexpectedly involved in an investment scam through a mobile game.
His ordeal began with innocent sessions of mobile games, where popup ads for investment courses piqued his interest in the burgeoning world of cryptocurrency.

He pursued this interest through six different online courses and was subsequently persuaded to invest in a new cryptocurrency. Initial high returns enticed him to invest further.
He first put RM1 million of his own money into this venture, and then, in pursuit of even greater returns, borrowed money to increase his total investment to RM2 million.
With high hopes, he sold his entire cryptocurrency portfolio right before the Chinese New Year, expecting substantial profits.
However, his hopes were dashed when the company shut him out, refusing to dispense any of the promised returns and going as far as blocking his phone number, leaving him stranded with no recourse.
The realization of the fraud prompted him to seek justice, filing a police report, and even waiting outside the company’s supposed address since Chinese New Year’s Eve.
His efforts to uncover the identities of the fraudsters have, thus far, been fruitless.
In his Facebook message, Lim Li Ying urges the public to exercise caution and skepticism, especially when faced with offers that seem too generous to be legitimate.
MP Lim’s post is a call to spread awareness and help others avoid falling for such traps.
