When it comes to makan time, Malaysians take their food seriously and cleanliness is just as important as taste.
So when a video of rats helping themselves to food at a well-known mamak restaurant started making its rounds online, it didn’t just stir stomachs; it sparked outrage too.
The now-viral clip, believed to have been taken during operating hours, shows a rodent confidently scurrying across the food counter, stopping to nibble from trays of uncovered dishes.
The restaurant, located near AmBank in Mahkota Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, quickly became the target of public criticism for its apparent lack of hygiene.

To make matters worse, the timing of the video caused even more distress.

Not long after the footage surfaced, multiple customers shared on social media that they had just eaten there, completely unaware of what was going on behind the scenes.
“I just came home from eating at that restaurant,” one diner wrote.

As the backlash grew, so did calls for accountability.
What was once a go-to spot for late-night roti and teh tarik is now facing boycotts from former regulars, with many urging for the restaurant to be shut down until proper health inspections are carried out.
At the time of writing, no official statement has been issued by the restaurant or local health authorities.
However, netizens are demanding that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and relevant enforcement teams step in quickly to ensure the safety of future customers.
