In recent weeks, there has been a spate of news concerning a large number of Malaysians who have yet to repay their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans years after borrowing the money to fund their studies.
Given the ballooning amount of unpaid debts, PTPTN has resorted to various method to recoup back the money, including placing passive-aggressive advertisements at public places.
PTPTN: ‘Happy holidays to all our customers!’
In a brief TikTok video shared by Azrie Idzmeer, it showed an advertisement by PTPTN being displayed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2 with the following caption:
Happy holidays to all PTPTN customers. May you have a safe trip to your destination and return as well.”

In the caption, Azrie joked that while he had already paid his PTPTN loan, he said the advertisement must have caused unease among those who have not done the same.
Previously, PTPTN loan defaulters were barred from leaving the country if they failed to settle their loan, but it was abolished in 2018.
However, the government is mulling to reinstate the travel ban after the number of defaulters skyrocketed in recent years.
‘Feels like guilt tripping’
The video has since racked up 1 million views at the time of writing, as well as mixed reactions from netizens.
Some commented about the tone behind the advertisement, with one calling it an example of “guilt tripping”.

Another said he felt “attacked” by the ad as he is still studying in university with the money he borrowed from PTPTN.

On the other hand, some criticised those who had yet to settle their loans and urged them to do so as it might bring negative impacts in the future.

Meanwhile, a netizen shared how a friend of hers who borrowed from PTPTN but has yet to repay a single cent despite being a company owner with a monthly income of RM20,000.
