Prime Minister Anwar Urges M’sians To Reduce Sugar Intake To ‘Save The Country’

Stay healthy!
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has raised concerns about Malaysia’s obesity and diabetes rates, which rank among the highest in Asia.

Speaking at the launch of the “2024 Malaysia Health and Wellness Month,” the “National Health Literacy Policy,” and the “Anti-Sugar Campaign” in Port Dickson today, he highlighted that the excessive sugar intake, combined with an imbalanced diet and lack of exercise, are key factors contributing to the nation’s health issues.

Public awareness on sugar consumption

According to Sin Chew, Anwar called on Malaysians to start making lifestyle changes now by taking better care of their health, reducing sugar consumption, and not using busy work schedules as an excuse to avoid exercise.

He also emphasized the need to raise public awareness about health.

High rates of obesity, excessive weight, and diabetes are widespread, so let’s protect our country, our children, our families, and our parents by managing sugar intake, (but) not by eliminating it entirely.

Unhealthy food in school

Anwar pointed out that early health education should be instilled in children, urging schools to play a role in promoting healthy habits.

He noted that while school canteens previously sold unhealthy food, the situation has improved significantly.

The Prime Minister explained that by focusing on personal health, the nation’s healthcare costs could be reduced, allowing the government to allocate funds toward other areas of national development and economic growth.

Lead by example

Anwar also revealed that the Prime Minister’s Office has directed all catering services to cut sugar content by 50% in their refreshments, in an effort to lead by example.

He stressed that while the education and health ministries continue to receive the largest share of the national budget, the government hopes to reduce unnecessary healthcare expenses and avoid wasteful spending.

Anwar ended his speech by encouraging Malaysians to prioritize their health, noting that personal wellness is the foundation for contributing to the nation’s progress.
