With Malaysia’s National Day approaching on August 31, homes, cars and shops across the country are starting to display the Jalur Gemilang. The sight of flags lining streets not only creates a festive atmosphere but also reflects the nation’s unity.
JPA shares correct way to hang the flag
In a recent post, the Public Service Department shared tips on how to hang the national flag correctly as a sign of patriotism.
The post stressed that respecting the Jalur Gemilang means respecting the country.
The Jalur Gemilang flag is a horizontal rectangle with a 2:1 ratio, and should only be displayed horizontally. Hanging it upside down, diagonally, or vertically is prohibited.
Rules for vertical designs
For vertical designs, the red stripe should be on the left and the white stripe on the right when viewed from the front.

Flags with a swallow-tailed end should be hung with the two points facing downward, never sideways.
Key rules when handling the flag
The department also reminded the public of key rules when handling the flag:
- Do not allow the flag to touch the ground
- Avoid touching the flag with dirty hands
- Do not use the flag as a tablecloth or to cover objects (except on official vehicles in formal events)
- Do not place the flag on the ground
- Refrain from talking during the national anthem and flag-raising ceremony
These guidelines aim to ensure the Jalur Gemilang is always displayed with dignity.
