If you have a pet, you’d do anything in your power to find them safe and sound if they were to run away.
A woman in China was left devastated after she came to discover that her pet dog not only got struck down by an oncoming car, but was even consumed by a group of highway workers.
Pet dog runs away from boarding centre, gets hit by car
According to Chinese media, the woman had sent her dog Yi Yi to a pet boarding centre before leaving for the Maldives for her Chinese New Year holidays.

On the first day of CNY (Jan 29), the dog got spooked by fireworks being set off and ran away from the boarding centre, where it found itself at a highway nearby.
It was later revealed via CCTV footage that Yi Yi got knocked down by a car, but the dog reportedly didn’t suffer any fatal injuries.
After receiving news of her dog’s escapade, the woman immediately flew back from the Maldives and returned to Shenzhen, where she offered a  ¥50,000 (approx. RM30,400) reward for the person who could find Yi Yi.

However, nothing could have prepared her for what would be the most mortifying discovery of her life upon checking the CCTV footage.
Highway workers allegedly ate dog up
According to the footage, Yi Yi was found alive by highway patrol officers at 10.36am. Instead of taking the dog to the vet, they brought it to their company cafeteria.
There, the dog was allegedly cooked and eaten by a total of eight individuals, all believed to be highway workers.

The woman also accused the the highway workers of avoiding her questions and trying to prevent her from finding Yi Yi.
Thought Yi Yi was a stray
Following massive public anger over the matter, the company released an official statement on Feb 6, where it admitted it had indeed occurred.
However, they asserted that when Yi Yi was found, the dog showed “no vital signs” and was thus thought to be a stray dog, leading the officers to decide handling the carcass “privately”.

The company also apologised for the incident and vowed to take appropriate action against those involved.
