A popular coffee shop, Kopi Hainan, has announced a price increase for their coffee menu following the recent hike in diesel prices, sparking controversy among netizens.
According to a notice posted on Facebook, Kopi Hainan informed their customers that despite their best efforts to maintain current prices, they are compelled to increase their coffee prices due to rising operational costs.
50 sen increase
Starting July 15, the price of their 22oz original coffee will rise to RM4.50 across all branches in Malaysia, marking a 50 sen increase per cup.
“On behalf of Kopi Hainan HQ, we sincerely appreciate your continued support for our brand and products. Despite our utmost efforts to maintain our selling prices, we are forced to make price adjustments due to current cost increases,” stated a representative from Kopi Hainan HQ.

In the comment section of their notice, Kopi Hainan further clarified that the prices of their raw materials, including milk, cups, plastic, and most recently coffee beans, have been rising for some time, necessitating the price adjustment.

Online backlash
Despite these explanations, the announcement has sparked a debate among netizens, who question the rationale behind a 50 sen surcharge for a beverage business amidst the rise in diesel prices.
Many argue that the price hike is unjustified and burdensome, given that the business solely deals with drinks.
“Making coffee with diesel now, are we?”

“Starting to take advantage….why didn’t they raise the price before the diesel subsidy was removed…..”

“Lucky to be able to raise prices… our salaries stay the same…”

Upon backlash, they published another statement clarifying that they are only increasing the price of the original menu by 50 sen only; the prices of other menus remain the same.
They also stated that they are raising the selling price not because of the rise in diesel prices, but instead due to the current cost of their raw materials, which have been rising for some time, such as milk, plastic cups, and most recently, coffee beans
