A police corporal is now fighting for his life after he injured himself with a pistol at the police contingent headquarters (IPK) in Penang.
Following the shooting, he was rushed to the Penang Hospital and is now being treated at the Red Zone of the Emergency and Trauma Department, reported NST.
Penang policeman accidentally fires gun on himself
Further details on the incident were later revealed in a statement by state police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.
According to the statement, the shooting occurred at 6.12pm yesterday (Apr 8) when the 58-year-old officer, who was attached to the Command Camp branch, fired the gun on himself by mistake, leaving him with severe head injuries.
He was eventually found in the guard room and was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
Hamzah added investigations at the scene found that a single gunshot was fired from the pistol used by the officer.

He also called upon the public not to speculate as it might jeopardise police investigations.
Police investigating
Meanwhile, Timur Laut deputy police chief Lee Swee Sake said the officer still remains in an unconscious state, Berita Harian.
He added police are probing the incident following claims that the officer was facing depression and financial woes.

“We’re in the process of recording the statement of the victim’s family, who travelled from KL at 1.30am today (Apr 9) to assist investigations,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960.
