Penang PAS has urged the state government to halt the RM17.3 billion LRT project and divert funds to improve road safety following the deadly UPSI bus crash.
15 students killed in Gerik crash
The tragic accident on June 9 claimed the lives of 15 Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) students.
Their bus collided with a minivan along the East-West Highway near Gerik, Perak, after reportedly speeding and losing control on a dark, winding road.
In an official media statement, Penang PAS described the crash as a result of systemic failure in public transport safety, not just a one-off incident.
They stressed that the current safety management of public transport is inadequate and requires urgent reform.
LRT project should wait
PAS Penang Chief YB Ustaz Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan called on authorities to postpone the multibillion-ringgit Penang LRT project.

He suggested prioritising the upgrading of the Gerik-Jeli highway instead, which he said urgently needs more attention and funding.
Call for urgent government action
PAS Penang also said a holistic solution is needed.
Among their proposals:
- Regular evaluation of bus operators and drivers
- Stricter checks on vehicle condition
- Training programs for commercial drivers
- Well-lit and maintained road infrastructure, especially in high-risk areas
He also proposed the creation of an independent body to monitor and audit public transport operators to ensure long-term safety improvements.
