A viral video has recently surfaced online where it showed an aunty getting robbed of her belongings during daytime in Penang.
However, what made it all the more disheartening was the fact that no one intervened or took the initiative to assist the aunty despite watching the robbery unfold before their eyes.
Penang aunty gets robbed in broad daylight
In the 12-second clip shared on Facebook by Penang Kini, it began with the aunty getting into a scuffle with the robber, who was scrambling to get to his feet and motorcycle.

Amid the scuffle, the aunty tried her best to stop the robber from making his getaway by hitting him with her fists, but it proved to be futile.
In the end, all she could do was watch the robber grab what appeared to be her handbag from the ground before fleeing the scene on his motorbike.

All throughout the clip, several cars were seen passing by the scene but not a single person emerged to offer the aunty help in apprehending the robber.
According to the clip’s caption, the robbery took place at Jalan Tembaga in Jelutong and a police report has since been lodged.
Netizens slam passersby’s inaction
In the comment section, netizens were angered to see no one coming to the aunty’s aid and choosing to stay away instead.
‘Those driving their cars…are they stupid? How could they not help in a situation like this and relax inside their cars instead?’

‘Our society is dying.’

Netizens also condemned the person who filmed the entire robbery and called them out for watching from the sidelines.

Son shares more details
Speaking to WeirdKaya, the aunty’s son Elwyn said the incident took place between 3.30pm and 3.35pm when his mother was on her way back home from the Batu Lanchang Market.
“The robber suddenly came up to her and instructed her to pull over while claiming he was a policeman. However, my mother was suspicious as he wasn’t in a uniform.
“Before she could say anything, the robber tried to grab a gold necklace with a pendant on it from her neck but failed. He then tried again and was successful,” he said, adding the robber only managed to grab a portion of the necklace as it had snapped during the scuffle.

Elwyn also called upon netizens to stop bashing those who didn’t come to his mother’s aid at the time, saying it was a “misunderstanding”.
The lady who was driving a Mazda (in the clip) thought my mother and the robber were having an argument and dared not to interfere.
“However, when she realised what had actually happened, she took my mother to the police station to lodge a report. I’m truly grateful for her help,” he said.
Elwyn said he hopes the authorities will provide more safety patrols in the area as it’s mostly occupied by elderly people.
Robber caught
Thankfully, there was a happy ending to the story, with Seri Delima assemblyperson Connie Tan sharing an update about it.
According to the post, the robber was arrested by police today at around 4am. Tan also praised the aunty for her bravery in defending herself from the robber, who had posed as a policeman.
