Two MPs from Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) has put forth a proposal of their own in replacing alcoholic drinks that are currently being served to passengers on Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flights.
The suggestion was made by Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (PN-Parit) and Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit Buntar) during a debate over the Supply Bill 2026 in Parliament.
PAS MPs suggest serving cendol to passengers
During the debate, Mohd Misbahul said that MAS should consider looking into serving local beverages such as sirap bandung, cendol, and ais batu campur (ABC) instead of alcohol to passengers.
“To attract tourists, it’s not necessary for us to serve alcohol on flights. What’s wrong with offering traditional drinks like sirap bandung, cendol, and ABC instead of alcohol?” he was quoted as saying by NST.

His proposal was seconded by Muhammad Ismi, who argued that most passengers do not drink alcohol on flights.
Why prioritise the minority? This needs to be considered. Let’s not take pride in things prohibited by religion. In every faith, alcohol is seen as a negative practice,” he added.
Meanwhile, another PAS lawmaker, Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PN-Sik) brought up a 2015 incident where the MAS flight en route to Sri Lanka had to turn back due to disruption caused by a drunk passenger.
He also cited Saudi Airlines and Royal Brunei as successful examples of performing well in the industry despite not serving alcohol.

Previous objections
This isn’t the first time PAS MPs had expressed discomfort over alcohol being served on MAS flights, with the most recent being made by Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor).
He claimed that he had personally heard and seen most Muslim flight attendants being made to serve alcohol against their will.
“This is not about denying anyone’s rights — it is about respecting the religion and sensitivities of the majority of Malaysians,” he said while calling upon the Transport Ministry to ban alcoholic drinks on flights.

A similar call was also made back in 2017 by PAS Youth deputy chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari after a drunk passenger tried to force his way into the cockpit of Malaysia Airlines flight MH128.
