Paralympic Council Demands Apology From Cheah Liek Hou For Calling It A ‘Scammer’

"He could have apologised to ease the tension."
Two-time Paralympic gold medallist Cheah Liek Hou and the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) have been engaged in a dispute that spilled out to the public eye regarding a RM60,000 reward that reportedly wasn’t paid in time.

The matter was further brought up a few notches after Cheah slammed PCM as a “scammer”, prompting a furious response from the organisation in the form of a ban threat and possible legal action over his remarks.

Although Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh later held talks with PCM which resulted in the ban threat being rescinded, it seems that the organisation still isn’t ready to let the matter slide.

In an interview with Astro Arena, PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin expressed unhappiness over Cheah calling it a “scammer” and demanded that he apologise for it.

His approach was unprofessional and he could have made an effort to ease tensions by apologising for the mistake, and it would be enough to win back the confidence of PCM as the umbrella body for para athletes in the country.

“I believe no individual or organisation in the world would agree with the use of that word (scam organisation).

“We must be aware of and practise respect, and be fair in all matters. I always remind everyone, including myself, to apologise and make amends when necessary,” he said.

In the meantime, PCM is waiting for a written explanation from Cheah and the BA of Malaysia regarding his comments.

“We will be in direct contact with the responsible sports association and also need to gather information so that it becomes a lesson,” added Megat.
